CHAPTER SIX

Speaking with Harry had shed more light on the situation, although it didn’t help Lily determine which sister was the guilty party. Steph would have been filled with anger about the situation, but Harriet would have been angry too as she might well have blamed Steph for preventing her having a relationship with Harry. Given what Lily had read in her assessment, she wasn’t ready to ignore the idea of Harriet being the killer, despite her being the most distraught. She began to think that there was some truth to Steph’s words. Harriet had already crossed one social taboo by falling in love with her sister’s husband. Was murder another line she would have crossed? Lily decided she needed to have another conversation with the sisters in the hope that she might be able to pluck some vital knowledge out of the air.

Harriet was sitting in a cell. It was a small room with a padded bunk, a toilet, and a small desk. There were heavy bags under her eyes, but she brightened when she saw Lily.

“Is it over? Have you arrested her?” Harriet asked.

“I’m afraid not. We’re still trying to collect more evidence,” Lily watched the disappointment fall across Harriet’s face. “I’m actually here to ask you a few more questions.”

Harriet swallowed a lump in her throat. Perhaps she knew what this was going to be about.

“Harriet, why didn’t you tell us that you were the reason why Steph and Harry got divorced?” Lily asked.

Harriet pressed her lips together and when she spoke her voice was a raspy whisper. “I wasn’t the reason. They were having trouble before Harry and I started speaking to each other. It was never going to work between them. I could have told them that from the beginning. She didn’t understand him like I—“ she caught herself before she finished the sentence. Lily didn’t need to be an expert sleuth to tell that Harriet still had deep feelings for the man, and deep feelings could often lead to unpredictable results.

“Harriet, if we’re going to get through this then I need you to be honest with me, completely honest, okay?” Lily said. Harriet nodded in response. “I need to ask you about what happened. How did you feel when you and Harry began to get close?”

Harriet shifted her weight uncomfortably. “I felt awful, but at the same time I felt happy. Harry is… he understood me like nobody else had before. He could tell exactly what was happening in my mind and he always knew the right things to say. I never had to worry about being afraid when I was with him. I had never been that close with anyone before and I knew it was a sham because there was no way he spoke to Steph the same way he spoke to me. He couldn’t have been that close with her. I felt guilty though, because she was still my sister, but she always had everything. Things came so easily to her and I thought for just once it was nice that something was coming my way for a change.
